Nana Kwesi Ofori, the Central Regional Cocoa Chief Farmer, has appealed to cocoa farmers in the region to stop applying unapproved chemicals and fertilizers on their farms.

He said using such unapproved chemicals did not help the trees to produce quality beans and slowly destroy the farms.

Nana Ofori said this at a day’s seminar at Assin Foso under theme “Problems militating against Cocoa Production and cocoa farm productivity in Ghana: The case of farmers in Assin North”.

It was attended by cocoa buying companies, the farmers, traditional rulers, assembly members and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

The workshop was aimed at addressing challenges facing cocoa farmers and cocoa farming.

“You are to use Cocoafed, Sidalco liquid fertilizers, Atara and Confidor which are some of the approved fertilizers by the Cocoa Institute”, he said.

Nana Ofori said these chemicals and fertilizers could help to produce more and quality cocoa beans to help sustain the country’s position at the world market.

Mr Samuel Ato Essuman, Assin Foso District Cocoa Officer, said the Cocoa Board has incorporated basic accounting, basic economics and management in the training of farmers to enable keep simple accounts of their farms.
