| Roads Closed For Mills |

The police have decided to block some roads in the capital city to ensure a successful interment of the late President Mills Evans Atta Mills.
The measure, which takes effect from tomorrow August 8 to Friday August 10, 2012, would see the closure of roads including the 28th February Road, High street, Osu cemetery traffic intersection and Obansanjo Highway.
This is to allow for free movement of official motorcades, convoys and security vehicles to ensure order during the burial and funeral ceremony.
A statement issued and signed by Director General of Police Operations, Commissioner of Police (COP) John Kudalor said “the 28th February Road shall be closed to motorists.”
In view of this, he said “vehicular traffic emanating from Labone, Osu and La and heading towards the Central Business District will turn right at the Castle traffic onto Lokko street to link up with the Oxford street towards Danquah circle.”
The High street is also expected to be blocked at the CEPS intersection.
However, the statement said “traffic will be diverted onto the National Theatre road through TUC and will further link up to the Ring road towards Osu.”
Furthermore, the Osu cemetery traffic intersection would also be closed at the Castle traffic intersection, so would the road from the National Theater towards Osu, as well as the Ministries and the Accra Sports Stadium roads.
For this reason, COP Kudalor stated that “all traffic along these routes will be diverted onto the TUC, towards the Cathedral intersection, to link up with the Ring road.
The Obansanjo highway would equally be sealed off at the Kawukudi intersection.
Motorist heading towards Accra have thus been advised to use the Kanda highway whilst those heading to Osu are also expected to use the Gold House section of the road and link up to the Airport traffic light, further to the El-Wak traffic intersection.
The statement therefore noted that “vehicles would not be allowed through the aforementioned roads.”
However, accredited security and authorized vehicles carrying designated dignitaries through the location of the events would be allowed to pass through the police check points after what promises to be meticulous screening process, an indication that efficient control and management of traffic at the event sites (State House, Independence Square and the Flagstaff House) would be tight.
To this effect, towing cars are scheduled to be placed at vantage points to remove what the police described as ‘disabled’ and ‘wrongly’ parked vehicles.
Members of the general public who may want to visit the Independence Square to witness the burial and funeral service have been advised to park their vehicles at the car parks at the GNAT Heights, SSNIT car park near the Children’s Park, SSNIT car park near the Pension House, City car park near the Standard Chartered Bank headquarters on the High Street and any other car park outside the restricted area free of charge.
