News of the death of President John Evans Atta Mills Tuesday afternoon disrupted market activities in the Central Market in Ho, the Volta Regional capital.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the market and observed that some traders, who initially did not believe the news, abandoned their goods and went to the roadside in an attempt to seek confirmation of the news.

Others intermittently made phone calls while selling to seek confirmation of the news. The GNA saw people moving about aimlessly, singing dirges, and the weather in Ho was ominous.

Some residents, who believe in superstition, said they were not surprised at the news, given the dull weather, which suggested that something unusual was happening.

At around 1600 hours when the news hit Ho, the town went silent as people gathered around television and radio sets to get more information on the death of the President.

Some people were heard wailing openly and the Right Reverend Francis Amenu, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian (E.P) Church, said the message was a “thunderbolt” and he hardly believed it.

He said the E.P Church last Sunday organized a special service to wish President Mills a happy birthday, and added that the death was very disturbing. Rt. Rev. Amenu said: “the Nation has lost a very loving and caring one. We pray that his spirit and soul rest in the bosom of his maker.”
