The United States Embassy in Ghana has withdrawn the services of all Peace Corps volunteers from the Upper West Region following an attack on two volunteers in the Wa municipality Saturday.

According to the police in Wa, the two volunteers, Andrew Kristofer and Rachel Riccardi, after reporting the incident to the police, were given medical forms for treatment and they have since left for Accra for medical attention.

The police said the volunteers were to report themselves in Wa on July 23, 2012 for further investigations.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the withdrawal of the services of the Peace Corps volunteers has affected teaching in some senior high schools in the region.

The two US Peace Corps volunteers were picked up by police after a man, Najas Illiasu, who attacked them in the early hours of Saturday with a machete, was later found dead,

They allegedly stabbed Illiasu, who had attempted to rob them after he had inflicted machete wounds on one of them. The two were returning from a drinking spot to their residence at Dobile in the Wa municipality when they were attacked by two men. One of their attackers is at large.
