A 32-YEAR-OLD woman met her untimely death at Adakoje in Ashaiman on Wednesday morning when a high tension cable belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) fell on her.
The deceased, who was identified as Mary Ebo-Teye, a food vendor at Ashaiman, was said to be carrying her son, Desmond Teye, a 4-year-old pupil at her back when the unfortunate incident occurred.
The deceased was returning home after she had gone to buy porridge for her son when the live cable fell directly on her chest, abruptly throwing the child at her back away.
A resident was said to have used an object to lift the cable which had fell on the deceased. Desmond, who sustained burns on some parts of his body, was admitted at the Emergency Unit of the Tema General Hospital whilst the lifeless body of the woman was deposited at the hospital morgue pending autopsy.
The gruesome incident which occurred at about 5:45am that morning compelled some residents and shop owners in the area to react aggressively towards ECG officials who visited the scene to fix the problem.
ECG personnel were heckled and drove away by the angry youth who later blocked access route to the scene and threatened to burn the company’s vehicle, despite police intervention to restore peace.
According to the residents, the ECG personnel in the region had refused to answer several phone calls from them to rectify the problem on that pole.
Speaking with Daily Guide shortly after the incident, Hon. Alfred Kwame Godonoo, Assembly Member of Oko Mantey Electoral Area noted that the affected electrical pole had experienced series of problems.
“There was fire on that particular pole six months ago, followed by several electrical faults but the ECG personnel refused to come and address the situation,” Hon. Godonoo lamented.
Theresa Osabutey, Tema Regional ECG Public Relations Officer (PRO) explained to Daily Guide that the incident occurred as a result of two different metals joined together, copper and aluminium, called by-metal, to connect two wires from different directions. Due to the connection, whenever it rains those two metals experienced some flashes as a result of the power passing through the cable.
Responding to the accusation from the resident, Miss. Osabutey mentioned that the complaints by the residents had been noted and a committee to investigate the matter will be set up to find those who refused to respond to calls by the residents.
She expressed the company’s profound sympathy to the deceased’s family, saying that the incident would not occur again. |
