At a time the issue of cocaine has grabbed national attention, the Weija area in Accra has suddenly become a hub for trading in the narcotic substance, as five peddlers were arrested yesterday. The Weija District Police Command arrested the five men for allegedly trading in some whitish substance suspected to be cocaine.

The suspects are Eric Mensah, 24, Kwame Tawiah, 53, Atoquaye Arhin, 43, Frederick Mordey, 42 and Samuel Kumasah, 47. They were arrested at Kokrobite Beach, Ayegbe Town and Kalabuley areas. Some other items found on them were dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and some concoction believed to be alcoholic beverages laced with Indian hemp.

Their arrest was part of a swoop conducted by the police to rid the area of criminals. Briefing Daily Guide, the Weija District Police Commander, ASP Kwame Afari, indicated that when the police combed the area early in the morning around 5:00am, a lot of people were found buying the substance. Upon seeing the police, the suspects took to their heels, but the security agencies managed to arrest sellers of the substances.

The Kokrobite Beach area, according to the commander, is known to be a den for criminals, as a lot of bag and mobile phone snatching cases had been recorded. He noted that the items would be sent to the police forensic laboratory for testing to ascertain whether they were cocaine or other substances.
