Prosecutors yesterday preferred additional charge against Nana Kwasi Yirenkyi, Head Pastor of Jesus Blood Prophetic Ministry at Oblogo in Accra, who is being tried for having sex with her 10-year-old daughter.

Popularly known as ‘Jesus One Touch’, Nana Yirenkyi was last March 9, put before court on a charge of incest but the prosecution for the additional charge when it substituted the old charge sheet with a new one at the second hearing yesterday.

For the second time, Nana Yirenkyi was refused bail by the Accra Circuit Court presided over by Mrs. Georgina Mensah-Datsa, because she said the defence team could not provide any exceptional circumstance under which bail should be granted. He was thus remanded into police custody to appear again on March 23.

Under the country’s laws, defilement falls under the category of offences that bail should not be granted. Although the defence counsel, K.N. Adomako Acheampong, acknowledged this fact and he submitted that the judge has the discretion under the law to grant bail in special circumstances. He therefore thus urged the court to grant his client bail since “the prosecution is unsure when the case will start. “This is one of the cases that border on blackmail rather than facts,” he argued, and said the prosecution’s case failed to show indications of establishing a prima facie case against his client.

He pleaded with the court to look at the pedigree of the accused person, especially for the fact that “he has a flock to lead in his church” saying his continued detention could result in the collapse of the church. He assured the court that his client would avail himself for trial at all times when granted bail, under whatever bail conditions that the court would deem fit.
