The Manhyia Palace is calling for restraint as efforts are made to resolve a dispute between Asanteman and the chief of Techiman. The call for restraint follows attacks on bus drivers in both Kumasi and Techiman after the Asantehene threatened to have the chief of Techiman kidnapped in retaliation for the kidnapping of the chief of Tuobodom.
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutut II met last night with a government delegation sent by President Mills to prevent the dispute from escalating.
A private secretary to Otumfuo Osei Tutu said the king had instructed all his subjects in Kumasi to let peace prevail.“First of all, the Asantehene would like to thank all for the support given him. But he also wants to say that the people of Techiman have not done any wrong so no one should disturb them.
It was their chief who committed an offence and even so government sent a delegation to come and discuss issues. We are using the law to discuss this and no one should destroy anyone’s property or disturb the peace,” the Asantehene’s spokesperson told Joy News.
Meanwhile, National Security adviser, Brig. Gen. Nunoo-Mensah, is in the Brong Ahafo Region on the second-leg of his mission to broker a peaceful resolution of the impasse between Techiman and Asanteman.
The Asantehene had threatened to kidnap the chief of Techiman if government failed to bring him to order for abducting the chief of Tuobodom who owes allegiance to the Ashantehene. Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah led the delegation which met the Asantehene at the Manhyia palace yesterday. Since that meeting the Asantehene has called for restraint.
