The Yendi Municipality in collaboration with UNICEF and a company named New Energy are providing mechanized water supply systems under the Small Town Water Project to selected communities of the area.

About GH¢127,453.25 is being sunk into the project for the Zakpalsi community, which would benefit about 4,000 people. Other areas such as Kpabia and Guntingli would have their projects commence soon.

Mr Hudu Walvis, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Yendi who told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Yendi on Friday said the intervention to supply portable water became crucial because of growing guinea worm cases in the communities.

He said the endemic situation of disease therefore brought the three bodies together to help to minimize the infection rate while also solving the water supply problem.

Mr Walvis said the project would distribute treated water from a source to stand-pipes for domestic and other uses. He said to ensure sustainability; a moderate fee would be levied for maintenance activities.

The MCE added that the Yendi Municipality had also recently benefited from some bole-holes to add up to the water supply while the mechanized system was yet to be implemented.

He called on the people to continue to live in peace since through that they could hasten development of the area.

"The area had seen a lot of instabilities, it is enough to focus on development and jobs for the youths," he added.

The MCE called for the peoples' support to develop a business advisory centre, which would offer employment and business ideas to people in the area.

He said cooperatives would soon be set up in the municipality to give credit to people to grow their businesses.
