Residents living especially in western Accra who have no water running through their taps for some time now may have to do without the utility for a while longer.

According to Aqua Vitens Rand Limited, supply to areas such as Dansoman, Mallam, Sakaman, Kaneshie, Odorkor and Bubuashi was disrupted after a breakdown in equipment at the Weija water treatment plant. Officials explain that the electronic transmission system blew up last Thursday.

Public Relations Officer for Aqua Vittens Rand, Stanley Martey, said the Weija treatment is producing under capacity because only one plant is currently in operation. According to Mr Martey, a new treatment plant set up is no longer in operation, a situation which is putting a lot of stress on the company.

The Weija plant currently produces between 10 million and 15 million gallons of water daily, quantities which are not sufficient for the company’s market. He advises residents in western Accra to store water, especially in the evening and at night when their taps start running.
