Sources close to all the mobile companies operating in Ghana – Vodafone; MTN; Tigo; Kasapa and Zain have confirmed that the months of June this year and June 2011, will be very pivotal in the telecommunications industry in Ghana.

They have confirmed that they have come to an understanding with the National Communications Authority (NCA) and National Security that “within a regulatory framework, all owners of new mobile phone chips to be sold after June, this year, will have to provide photo identification. Owners of all existing mobile phone chips will have to provide similar identifications within the time frames or will have their chips blocked”.

There have been arguments for and against such registration over some months. The latest earthquake hoax seems to have swayed the minds of many Ghanaians that such a registration would minimize the abuse of phones, but such issues should be within a ‘legal framework’.
