The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, on behalf of the government of Ghana has presented 3 million U.S dollars and other relief items to support the victims and survivors of the Haiti earthquake.

Addressing the media at the Ministry of Information in Accra, the Minister said though geographically Ghana seems too far away from Haiti, the extent of damage and the number of death recorded is so horrifying that Ghana cannot distance herself from the disaster.

He added that Haitians according to history, originated from West Africa and that makes them Ghana’s kingsmen. Therefore, the Ghana government’s widow’s mite, he believes, will go a long way in assisting them. Alhaji Mumuni in his presentation noted the additional relief items comprise essentially of made in Ghana products like mattresses plastic products and cocoa products as well as medicine.

Receiving the items, the U.N Country Director, His Excellency Dauda Taure, extended appreciation to the government for the kind gesture.

Meanwhile, the NPP MP for Assin-North, Hon. Ken Agyapong, has commended the government for donating 3million dollars as part of effort to support the Haitians in the fate of their earthquake disaster. Hon. Agyapng who also presented 10,000 dollars as his token to support government’s effort, noted that at least the gesture will go a long way to prove the point that the African continent will not always be begging.

The Deputy Minister of Information, Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa, thanked the MP for his action and called on all and sundry to contribute their quota to the donation. He announced at the press conference that the World Vision International based in Ghana will be the coordinator of the fund in collaboration with Ghana Commercial Bank and the Zenith Bank.
