Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has come under serious criticism for cheating Ghanaians through the use of pre-paid meters introduced into the system.

Ms Diana Nyankopah, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Peace Watch Ghana, a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) fighting for the betterments of Ghanaians, pointed out that it is unlawful for a company to pretend as if it is helping the people whereas in actual fact, it is exploiting them.

Complaining to The Daily Democrat in an exclusive interview, Ms. Nyankopah revealed that ECG is cheating and stealing the good people of Ghana through their new pre-paid meter when one buys more units. She explained that unlike the petrol filling stations, one can buy petrol for number of times a day or recharges units on phones as much as he or she wants a day, the ECG pre-paid unit is not like that, if you buy ¢300,000 old cedis of pre-paid unit, ECG would give you 221 units likewise if one buys ¢500,000, the company would give you 306 units meaning that he more you buy the pre-paid unit, the less units the company gives you.

To the CEO of the Peace Watch Ghana said it is a kind of tactic that ECG has adopted to steal and cheat on Ghanaians without explaining why they are doing so. Ms. Nyankopah pointed out that ECG introduced the pre-paid meters into the country because people refused to pay their bills through the use of old meters which do not make them serve Ghanaians as they are supposed to do, “Hence the introduction of pay before you use which they are also using to reduce the very unit that customers has come to buy”.

She was of the view that what ECG is doing, is rather creating room for some people to carry out illegal connection which is against the law, therefore, they should come out and explain to the general public otherwise very soon Ghanaians will rise up against them.

Thinking that nobody can take the company to court, she indicated that the ECG’s rampant off and on of electricity is destroying the hard-earned electrical appliances that people have acquired. “It is now time for Ghanaians to wake up and take actions against the bad deeds of ECG,” she stressed. Ms Diana Nyankopah also descended on the ladies who sell the pre-paid units, saying they are not customer friendly, their attitude towards customers are very poor. “They don’t respect anyone and talk to people anyhow”, she remarked. She therefore called on the ECG Authorities to organize an orientation courses for members of staff on how to handle customers.

I THINK THE NGO CAN DO US ALL A FAVOR BY FINDING OUT FROM ECG HOW THE UNITS ARE CALCULATED. TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE THE BILL FROM ECG IS GRADUATED AND THE MORE ONE BUYS THE LESSER THE UNITS AS YOU EXCEED THE MINIMUM THRESHOLD

Good work done. I had GH¢218 worth of credit on my old meter. ECG said it will be transfered in 3months time. We are now in the 5th month and they have not transfered the credit. Anytime you call or go there, they keep telling you stories. Really ECG is cheating us bitterly.
