Muslim Girls in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality of the Central Region have cautioned parents to desist from giving out their daughters in early marriage to elderly men without considering their education.

This was made know recently when Ghana Muslim Girls Association (GMGA), a newly established Elmina based organization held its first general meeting there. The programme which was attended by parents of the girls was used to enlighten them on the need to educate their daughters rather than give them out in early marriage. The theme for the celebration was “Enlightening Parents about Girl Child Education.”

She again stressed the need for parents to educate their daughters and desist from spending money on unnecessary items that would not be of any benefit to them.

Ms. Gariba said the association was working hand in hand with the Ghana Police Service and the Social Welfare Unit to end early marriages within Muslim communities. “We as an association will never give room for such acts to continue” she warned saying guilty parents would be handed over to the Police and the Social Welfare Unit for prosecution.

Ms. Gariba said the association is also to enhance good parent/child relationships, educate them on early marriage and preach unity among all Muslims to prevent disputes. She added that it was also to promote moral education in Islamic traditions and teachings as well as help champion this vision of “promoting girl child education in the Muslim communities asking parents in particular to support GMGA to become a success.

What is the gain of a muslim parent if the daughter marries early? They still have the idea that a woman is here to have children for the man to perpetuate his family name. She is a sex machine and nothing else. I realized recently when a niece of mine was getting married to a muslim guy. When we were asked to nominate who will be the ' patrons' (for want of a better word) and I mentioned myself and my sister, mother of the bride, the man's people were surprised because in 'their tradition' only men have a say in matters of the family. The woman can be seen but not heard. A 5-year muslim male child is more important in the family than his 30 something year old mother. This must change, go for it girls! How did Hawa Yakubu of blessed memory and other women become well known?
