Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a renowned heart surgeon and immediate past head of the National Cardio-Thoracic Centre at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, yesterday performed life-saving surgical procedures on some victims of the Chereponi shooting incident in which a number of persons were seriously injured.

Speaking to Daily Guide from the Yendi Government Hospital where he had accompanied some of the injured persons from Chereponi, he said, “I brought seven persons with gunshot wounds from Chereponi, two of them seriously injured, whose X-ray result is being awaited.”

He was busy at the hospital performing life-saving surgeries on the injured after the X-ray results were out. Continuing, he said, “While here, two NPP supporters who were stoned in the outskirts of Chereponi when they were going to the town from Yendi were brought here having suffered injuries. One of them had his two eyes completely closed. They are in a bad shape. The situation is becoming nasty.”

He added that reinforcement was being sent to the town, a figure he put at about 700. The surgeon appealed to the leadership of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to let the situation get out of hand. Touching a little on what happened, he said, “The shooting which triggered the trouble was not from the Police but from an individual but I would prefer not to mention the name.”
