The name of the newly elected Pope has been disclosed following his election by 115 cardinals.

The new Pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio who takes over from Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI will be known as Pope Francis I.

He was chosen by at least two-thirds of the 115 cardinals from 48 countries, who cast their ballots in secret in the Sistine Chapel.

Pope Francis is a 76-year-old cardinal from Latin America and will be the 266th Pope chosen to lead the World’s Catholics.

In his first address, he prayed for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and asked all Catholics to pray to the Lord for him. He also expressed gratitude to the thousands of Catholics who had gathered to welcome him at St. Peters Square.

He will be the first elected Pope from the Americas specifically, Latin America.

His election was announced in Latin from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, to a massive crowd in the square holding umbrellas and flags of different countries as well as millions watching around the world.
