The Chairman of the Church Pentecost, Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah, has been explaining the rationale behind the sweeping changes made to some of the Church’s way of worship, most especially, the withdrawal of the strict imposition on head scarves and the wearing of jeans or pairs of trousers to church services, and asserts that it will in no way cause divisions in the Church.

According to him, in every sphere of life, whenever reforms are announced, some people will not entirely be in agreement, but proffered that gradually the changes will sit well with the members.

“Not everyone is happy whenever reforms are enforced, but we know that with time, members will adhere to these changes…Reformation begins from the heart…if you want someone to change from a particular behavior and you go about it from the outside, the changes will occur but it will be temporary,” Apostle Dr. Opoku Onyinah said.

The fundamental changes to the Church’s doctrine were arrived at after the College of Apostles, Prophets and Evangelists of the Church held their annual prayer meeting in Accra.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on PEACEFM News, Chairman of the Church Pentecost was emphatic that the showing of "cleavage" and the wearing of seductive or sexually-provocative dress cannot be encouraged in the church.

“The outfit of some ladies leaves much to be desired….we know of the “I’m aware” stuff. There’s also the “Yesu matriki wo” (Jesus, I’ve tricked you) dressing; whiles they look decently dressed on the front, their back is virtually bare, they called it “Yesu matriki wo”…that is not what we are encouraging. Infact, the church speaks against that,” he stressed.

According to him, while the purpose of these directives is not to stop the teaching of the genuine word of God or to correct people in righteousness, the COP recognises the present culturally-divergent nature of the Church and its mandate to disciple people of all nations and cultures.

At the end of their annual prayer meeting, the Church of Pentecost decided that the issue of head covering, which has been the source of embarrassment to female visitors to the Church over the years, has no categorical biblical foundation as a requirement for salvation and should, as such, not be imposed on church members or visitors to the Church’s worship services.

The Church urged that Rastafarians attending church meetings for the first time, or families or couples wishing to sit together during church services should all be permitted to sit quietly “at the feet of Jesus” to learn.

It continues that female members who may or may not wear head covering during church services should neither be looked down on nor considered by others as being 'sinful'.
