President John Atta Mills has endorsed the decision of the Electoral Commission to proceed with Tuesday’s election re-run at six (6) polling stations in the Akwatia constituency.

A statement from the Ministry of Information said President Mills has also assured the Commission of all necessary logistics and security arrangements to ensure a peaceful and successful election re-run.

Speaking after a meeting with the Vice President, and the Ministers for Defence and the Interior, President Mills overruled a recommendation of the Eastern Regional Security Council that the election re-run be postponed, and directed that the election comes off as scheduled.

He further directed the heads of the various security agencies to provide maximum security for Tuesday’s polls.

A curfew was imposed on the town of Akwatia and its environs on Sunday following political clashes that resulted in various degrees of injury to many people.

Signed:
HON. MRS. ZITA S. OKAIKOI
MINISTER FOR INFORMATION
ACCRA
