| PURC working to address electricity and water crisis – Asaga |

Mr Moses Asaga, Chairman of the Technical Committee of the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC), has said the committee was working closely with relevant institutions to address the deficit in national electricity and water supply.
He entreated the general public to exercise restraint as the perennial energy and water crisis reported in some parts of the country would soon be over.
Mr Asaga said this at a day’s public hearing on the theme, “ensuring quality of service delivery in the electricity and water sector”.
The event organised by the PURC in Sunyani, was to pave the way for participants and consumers in Upper West and Brong-Ahafo Regions to come out with peculiar problems that faced the sectors.
Mr Asaga said the technical committee was aware that the current load shedding exercise being undertaken by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO) was affecting production in all sectors of the economy.
This, among other reasons, he explained was why the PURC saw the need to embark on a nationwide public hearing to ascertain some of the major concerns and problems that faced consumers in the water and electricity sectors.
Mr Asaga said as an independent body, that report directly to the presidency, the PURC would always ensure that consumers or the general public obtain better utility services.
In an open forum, most of the participants complained about the poor service delivery among utility providers and called on the PURC to intervene address the situation.
Though some of them expressed appreciation to the general output of NEDCO’s service delivery in some parts of the Brong-Ahafo region, others were optimistic that peculiar problems within the company would be addressed to improve on quality services.
The participants also called for the expansion of the Abesim head works to enable the Ghana Water Company Limited to meet the required production of the 6 million gallons water daily. |
