The Saint Theresa’s Catholic Hospital at Nkoranza in the Brong-Ahafo Region recorded 290 unsafe abortions and five maternal deaths last year.

Within the period 2,473 cases of malaria were recorded high.

The Medical Officer, Dr Oduro Oppong Nkrumah said this at the Annual Health Performance Review Meeting of about 100 stakeholders in health at Nkoranza.

He said the high number of abortion cases was among the youth and sexually active persons between 20 and 29 years.

Dr Nkrumah said although the hospital recorded five maternal deaths, supervised deliveries were encouraging as more than thousand pregnant women visited the health facilities to deliver.

He said the hospital has been monitoring health records of teenagers between 10 and 17 years with the necessary attention to save life before developing complications during pregnancy.

In addition, health personnel surveillance covered women above 35 years who were at risk when they become pregnant, especially those who become pregnant after four deliveries.

The Nkoranza South Municipal Director of Health Services, Madam Ibrahim Salamatu, commended the community-based health surveillance volunteers and the traditional birth attendants for supporting health personnel to save lives in the communities.

She expressed concern about the low patronage of the Expanded Programme on Immunization EPI in some communities as some nursing mothers refused to send their children for the exercise.

Madam Salamatu stressed the need for men to encourage their wives to patronise the EPI to enhance the health needs of their children because the development and upbringing of children are shared responsibilities.
