About 600 Fulanis from neighbouring Burkina Faso are seeking refuge in Sapeliga in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

They fled from Yorikor and Zaabire communities in Burkina Faso as a result of an ethnic conflict between Busangas and Fulanis.

According to Burkinabe authorities, on December 31, 2012, a misunderstanding ensued between some Busangas and Fulanis in the Barigunse community and spilled over to Yorikor and Zaabire communities all in the Central East Province Region in Burkina-Faso.

The District Chief Executive for Bawku West, Alhaji Anaba Adam Moro told Citi News, the refugees have been temporarily camped at Sapeliga and are expected to return home on Sunday.

He said the Bawku West District Assembly presented relief items to the refugees for their upkeep.

Alhaji Moro advised the refugees to be disciplined and desist from acts that might thwart their temporary stay in Sapeliga.

The Governor of the Central East Province, Allahidi Diallo has commended the Ghanaian authorities for accommodating the refugees.

He disclosed that temporary shelters have been created at Nayuuga Community in Burkina Faso for their relocation.
