Reverend Yaw Boamah, President of the Legon Interdenominational Church on Wednesday described late President John Evans Atta Mills as a courageous and peaceful man.

He said the late president Mills saved the nation from chaos by conceding to former president Mr. J. A. Kufuor in the 2000 elections even against opposition from his own party.

Rev. Boamah said this is one thing many people seem to forget about late President Mills when they reflect on his life and achievement for the country.

He made the call when he delivered a sermon at a Memorial Service to celebrate the life of the late President Mills at the Legon Interdenominational Church.

The service, which was attended by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Heads of Departments, University of Ghana Alumni Association, University of Ghana Teachers Association (UTAG) and the clergy was to honour the late President Mills.

Rev. Boamah also said late President Mills was a generous man who contributed his all for the spread of the gospel even as the Vice President of the Country.

He took his sermon from the book of Psalms and said “man is transient and life is short and only the Almighty God is eternal.”

Rev. Boamah said inherent in the principle of mortality is also the law of accountability which the late President Mills was committed to.

He said late President Mills was also devoted to the word of God and prayers which he observed fervently.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, in a tribute to late President Mills said hardworking and versatility effectively combined his work as a lecturer and sportsman.

He said his love for sports and the high pedestal to which he lifted sports at the University of Ghana greatly contributed to transforming the Sports Unit into a full-fledged Directorate.

He said as an academic, his expertise went beyond the classroom and is evidenced by the various examiner positions he held with finance related institutions in Ghana, including the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Institute of Bankers and the Ghana Tax Review Commission.

Professor Aryeetey also said the University of Ghana owed a debt of gratitude to late President Mills for making the University proud as the President of Ghana and the immeasurable support he gave to the school.

He said the late President Mills will always be remembered by his students and colleagues.
