One of the five cells inmates who escaped from the Tema Community Two Police Station has been re-arrested and handed a three-year jail sentence in hard labour at the Nsawam Prisons.

A police sergeant stationed at Community ‘2’, Kennedy Boateng, re-arrested the escapee, Richard Kwabena Opoku, 25, on July 23 at the Community ‘5’ traffic light, where he spotted the absconder in the front of a trotro.

On June 18 this year, Richard Opoku – together with four other inmates at the Community ‘2’ police cells; namely Oluwa Femi and Aguna Uche Jude, both Nigerians, and Prosper Dzanyikpor and Emmanuel Korley, both Ghanaians – reportedly broke the air vent at the cells and escaped from custody.

The Tema Circuit Court ‘A,’ presided over by His Lordship Brew Plunge, sentenced Richard Opoku on July 25 after he pleaded guilty to escaping from lawful custody.

According to Corporal Joseph Barabu, the Tema Regional Police public relations officer (PRO), Richard is also facing a charge of attempted murder, the charge on which he was being held in custody.

Corporal Barabu commended Sergeant Boateng for ensuring justice. He entreated the general public to call the police on MTN/Vodafone crime fighters’ short code 18555 with any information on the other four runaways.
