The Council for Afrika International and Afrika Liberation Society, two UK-based think-tanks have cautioned Ghana, Burundi, Rwanda and Democratic Republic (DR) of Congo marking their national days to be mindful of the unfinished business.
Ghana is marking 52nd Republican Day Anniversary, Burundi and Rwanda are celebrating their 50th independence anniversary whilst DR Congo is observing 52 years of independence.
A statement issued by Dr Koku Adomdza, President of the two bodies and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Monday congratulated the four countries on their national days, but alerts the ruling-elites that the battle for decolonisation is far from over and remains an unfinished business as long as the majority of indigenous African citizens remain in abject poverty, economically marginalised and dwell in subsistence living.
He noted that partial political decolonisation attained from the declarations of Independence, which ushered in self-rule, “was only the blow of the whistle”.
“It is therefore significantly critical, that the ruling elites of Ghana, Burundi, Rwanda and DR Congo to always remember the high bloody cost of freedom into which countless unknown Africans sacrificed their lives for.”
Dr Adomdza said Pan- Africanist leadership is urgently required to breathe new momentum into the Africa Liberation process by guaranteeing the fulfilment of the fundamental human rights and needs of majority Africans.
He asked the leaders to chart sustainable and independent pathways to eradicate poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy and greed.
He said the leaders have a responsibility towards Africa’s youth by creating a healthy generational legacy worthy of bequeathing as justification of their tenure in power and the privileges and opportunities that come with their high office. |
