Toppled Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak was reported to be “clinically dead” last night — as thousands protested against the military’s move to grant itself sweeping powers.

The 84-year-old was convicted of complicity in the slaughter of civilians during the country’s Arab Spring uprisings and sentenced to life. Yesterday he was said to have died as medics rushed him to hospital from prison.

A Cairo news agency reported that “his heart had stopped beating and did not respond to defibrillation”. The deposed tyrant had reportedly been suffering depression as well as shortness of breath and high blood pressure. Security sources at first contradicted media reports, insisting he was “unconscious and on a respirator”.

Angry crowds had gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square as the news broke after generals dissolved parliament and claimed legislative power.
