“Leadership is not like a ripe mango that has fallen from a tree, it is not that easy,” the following are the sage words of former President Kufour ahead of the official launch of the John Agyekum Kufuor (JAK) Foundation scheduled for Tuesday, September 20.
According to him, Ghanaians have made leadership too easy but he believes that for one to be addressed as a leader, the person must undergo training, apprenticeship and not necessarily speak good English and do proper Mathematics. To him, a good leader must have a heart of a servant but if the person acts like a king, then he does not deserve to be a leader because he will only make slaves out of his subordinates.
Mr. Kufuor added that a good leader must also see the Constitution of the country as the holy law, follow and abide by it.
The ex-president will today break the ground for the multi-million dollar JAK Centre for Leadership, Governance and Development project before proceeding to the Ashanti Region to also break grounds for the construction of a Presidential Library and Museum at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
Dignitaries, including the former President of the Republic of Germany, Horst Kohler, former South African President, Thabo Mbeki and the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will grace the occasion.
The dignitaries are expected to pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuor Osei Tutu II on Wednesday.
Speaking in an exclusive interview on Peace FM News, former President Kufuor said the main vision of his foundation is to educate people on leadership, governance and development; how to be a good leader and make good governance. He said when there is a good government, the framework, economy and social infrastructure development of a country moves on well.
Explaining his reason for choosing Legon and KNUST for his foundation, Gentle Jack as he is affectionately called noted that “he chose these two universities because it provides education to students from all walks of life, different regions and different countries”.
He stated emphatically that he did not chose Legon and KNUST out of discrimination but as a result of their stature and the courses they offer, stressing that both facilities will be opened to students from all other universities in the country.
