| Police pick up suspected guerrilla trainee |

The Police has picked up a suspected guerrilla trainee in Bawku, weeks after pictures were published in a Ghanaian newspaper.
A young man, whose description fits a person in one of the photographs of suspected guerrilla trainees is presently in Police custody in the Upper East Region.
ACP Bright Oduro, the Upper East Regional Police Commander confirmed the arrest of the suspect to Joy FM.
"The reason for him being picked up is that he has been identified as one of the those in the pictures that were maybe I would say leaked out in the press.
"It's only one person they have picked up now. And he is yet to be interrogated for us to get more information about the others in the pictures," Upper East Regional Police Commander, ACP Bright Oduro confirmed on Sunday.
The Ghanaian Observer newspaper published photographs of gun totting young men said be undergoing guerrilla training in the area.
Though the true identity of the suspect is yet to be established, reports say he is believed to be the son of Bawku Central Constituency Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
But the Regional Police Commander says they are not interested in the suspects’ political affiliations.
"He is yet to be interrogated. Whether he is politician or not is actually not our concern. Our concern is about individuals who were behind this so-called training at some parts in Bawku or so and who were using sophisticated weapons.
"So when we pick up an individual, we want to know his antecedents maybe his background. But of course, it's not very important as far as maybe his political lineage or affiliation is concerned."
The Police say, they hope the suspect would co-operate as they seek to establish whether the suspect is the one in the photographs published in the media and elicit more information.
"Well, if he turns out to be the one in the picture, of course. We are withholding his name for security reasons for the mean time. And if he turns out to be the one that has been identified in the picture then we expect him to tell us more about the others in the picture and all other people who were training with those weapons.
"We expect him to aid us but we cannot force things out of him if he is not willing. But I believe he would co-operate with us to be able to get behind or to be able to reach out to those people who were in the training camp." |
