Report from Wassa Akropong in the Western Region indicates that, one corporal Martin Atango of the Wassa Akropong Police station has been beaten to death by a mob at Asenua.

His corpse has since been deposited at the Tarkwa morgue. Information indicates that, the police man was sent on a mission to arrest a man who allegedly assaulted a youngster for selling some quantity of tomatoes for GH 1 instead of 60p.

The man is said to have fled to Nyawa Bekwai near Wassa Akropong to prevent arrest. However, when Corporal Martin Atango got there residents and youth in the area prevented him from affecting the arrest.

This turned into an argument resulting in a scuffle which caused the death of the police man. However the western regional crime officer for the Ghana police service has explained that it was rather the police officer who first shot and killed a unit committee chairman one Asare while attempting to give a warning shot since the crowd was getting out of control.
