The Nima Divisional Police Command under the new man in charge, Chief Superintendent Timothy Yoosa Bonga set new standards in community policing when he virtually moved his office to Nima 441 in a novelty interaction with residents, opinion leaders, assemblymen and tribal heads. He had with him the Kotobabi District Commander, ASP Florence Owusu and Airport District Commander, Superintendent Fosu Ackah.
The interaction held in the bowels of the sprawling suburb has gone down as a maiden program for winning public support. The excitement on the faces of residents was visible as they listened to the presentation by selected persons during the collaborative programme between the Nima West Neghbourhood Watchdog Committee and the Nima Divisional Command. By the time the programme came to an end there was renewed vigour in the commitment of the Neighbourhood Watchdog Committee leadership and members to press on with the anti-crime war in the wider Nima suburb.
In his address to residents the Divisional Commander appealed to them to contribute towards the maintenance of law and order by assisting police with information which could eventually save lives and protect property. In matters of security there is nothing like staying aloof he said because criminals know no limits and would not spare anybody to get what they desire.He told his audience a story of how a robber descended on people at prayer in a mosque and dispossessed them of their mobile phones to emphasize this. With the abundant local stories he applied to embellish his presentation he had his audience glued to their seats.
Modern policing he said is not entirely the task of the police service but the task of all and sundry explaining that even in advanced economies, the police system still depends on the support of the public for vital intelligence information to help them map out effective strategies.The police cannot be everywhere and so the need for public cooperation cannot be over-emphasised he stressed adding that those who prefer to be indifferent would soon find out belatedly that their contribution could have averted a crime whose repercussions is all-encompassing. He congratulated Nima residents for the support they rendered ACP Awuni Angwubutoge, the previous commander who now heads the Northern Regional Command and asked for the same level of assistance.
Mr. Bonga paid tribute to womanhood and pointed at the Greater Accra Regional Commander, ACP Rose Atenga Bio whose diligence he added should encourage women to aim high. On her part an assemblywoman Madam Damata urged residents to eschew politicizing issues and join hands for the development and well-being of the community. The Kotobabi District Commander encouraged residents to take up the issue of educating girls seriously so that they would grow into responsible citizens of the nation. The Nima Neighbourhood Watchdog Committee has collaborated with the Police to achieve what many have described as a fantastic reduction of crime in the sprawling suburb. Their success story is on the verge of being replicated in the Madina area Daily Guide has learnt.
