The Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu should first express contrition for perfidy before he goes out to display his self righteous hypocrisy. After all his treachery, Haruna has the audacity to accuse Jerry Rawlings of unfairness in his criticism of Prof. Mills.
If there’s anyone who is selfish and very greedy in the NDC, it is Haruna Iddrisu. This is a guy who, in less than 48 hours after Prof. Mills was sworn in as President, made claims on Joy FM, that he had received “numerous complaints from all over the country from party youths who are not too pleased because they have been snubbed” by the newly sworn in President – just under 48 hours Haruna was on the radio exerting pressure on the President.
Hitherto, he preyed on unsuspecting youth leaders in the various tertiary institutions across the country to protest against President Mills if he wasn’t made a minister; today he claims people are unduly putting pressure on the president. What was Haruna Iddrisu doing when he attempted to set the youths of the party against President Mills?
President Mills has the best intentions for the country. He has put principles above the attraction of high office. I personally admire his modest lifestyle and personal integrity which are in sharp contrast to the corruption and unbridled greed that came with the Kufour presidency.
But he cannot succeed with treacherous and callow characters like Haruna around the presidency. They are the reason why the country is in its current state of faltering morale.
Just over a year after being driven out of office by Ghanaian voters, largely because of a widely held suspicion of plunder, mismanagement and indifference, the opposition New Patriotic Party has the arrogance to think they can better run the country. Don’t blame them.
Blame it on President Mills. He had a unique opportunity to cherry-pick ministerial material that would help him quickly bring succour to the people of Ghana, but he opted for tokenism- forty percent women appointment and a list of largely untested lads. The result is a vote of no confidence.
Compromising for national good is no sign of weakness. We still have very competent members on the sidelines, people who know what is good for the NDC– the likes of Kwamina Ahwoi, Spio-Garbrah and Tony Aidoo - people who are very loyal, competent and have a huge network of international contacts badly needed in government today. Kwamina Ahwoi for example has been relegated to the academia when his services are badly needed in government.
He is versatile and can nicely hold the position of Attorney General. Ekwow Spio was ostensibly sidelined to ensure he didn’t become a threat. There should be no room for such drivel in the NDC. Let’s not reduce the party to this kind of pettiness.
