Graduate students in Ghana have given government up to Friday to pay their thesis and bursary grants or they’ll hit the streets. According to them, they will have no other option than to proceed with their intended demonstration on Monday if their demands are not met.

The students held a press conference a few minutes ago at the University of Ghana, Legon addressed by the President of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana, Dr. Samuel Bert Boadi-Kusi.

He told XYZ News moments after the press conference that, most universities are breaking on May 19 and students need their bursaries to be able to carry out their research works.

He said the delay in releasing the bursaries is defeating its essence. “Students need these moneys so much because for some people, they have even taken moneys on credit in anticipation that these moneys were going to come early.”

Dr. Boadi-Kusi said leadership of the graduate students have dialogued with the various institutions but it seems their concerns are being discounted because of the perception that graduate students would rather engage in dialogue than demonstrate.

He said government officials are “taking us (graduate students) for granted” and that is why they will be hitting the streets on Monday to send a “strong message to them”.
