The Ghana Education Service (GES) has been urged to educate pupils and students on the facts of Ghana's independence struggle and Dr Kwame Nkrumah's role as founder and first President of the modern state.
Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, made the call at a parade of pupils and students to mark Ghana's 53rd independence anniversary in Ho on Saturday.
The anniversary was under the theme, "Investing in the youth for a better Ghana."
Mr Amenowode said it was important that the youth of the country were made to know that Dr Nkrumah stood out among his contemporaries in the independence struggle so that they do not fall prey to any distortions of that fact.
He said well-trained educated and knowledgeable youths who are confident constitute an invaluable asset and investment for the future.
Mr Amenowode said it was for that reason that government was taking a number of measures in the education sector to prepare the youths adequately for the challenges of leadership in the future.
A total of 2,000 pupils and students took part in the march past with cadet corps from the OLA Girls Senior High School, Mawuli School and Mawuko Girls providing special attraction.
A gathering of clouds in the skyline provided a canopy over the Jubilee Park and served as a temporary cover against the sun.
The searing heat nevertheless had its toll on the young people some of whom were resuscitated by the Red Cross after pasing out, while others also survived the moment by drinking lots of water to wet their parched throats.
