A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced two people to 40 years imprisonment each for attempting to snatch a taxi cab from its driver.

Baba Atia alias "Ackom", 20, a labourer and Mohammed Adongo also known as "Colio", 31, a taxi driver, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and robbery.

Kwadwo John, alias Kwadwo Mohammed, their accomplice, who led the police to arrest them after the robbery, had already been sentenced to the same term of imprisonment by the court.
Police Chief Inspector Archibald Kwesi Fandoh told the Court presided over by Mr Justice Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that at midnight on February 7 last year John, Atia and Adongo hired a taxi Kofi Dwomoh was driving from Bantama to Adoato in Kumasi.

At a dark section at Adoato, they ordered the driver to stop the vehicle but he refused.

Chief Inspector Fandoh said Adongo, who was sitting in the front seat, attempted to remove the ignition key while those at the back seat beat the driver up.

In the ensuing struggle the vehicle veered off the road, ran over a gutter and crashed into a wall.

Dwomoh raised the alarm and Kwadwo John was arrested while Atia and Adongo escaped but Kwadwo John later led the police to arrest the two from their hideout.
